WEABL Player of the Week – 23 November 2022

Only two games made up the latest instalment of WEABL action, yet there still more than a few worthy Player of the Week candidates.

Whittling it down to just two, a pair of Charnwood team mates were in contention before it was decided that Alex Shaw had done just enough to receive the award.

The Riders beat last season’s playoff finalists Nottingham Academy Wildcats 87-83 on the road, with Shaw and team mate Erin Powell doing the damage.

Shaw finished with a stunning 40 points and a +/- of 20, showing just how integral she was in her side’s win.

With 21 rebounds that included eight on offence, plus an assist, a steal and a block, the talented scorer did enough to seal this week’s award on a great afternoon for Charnwood.

Speaking about her performance, Shaw said: “I am extremely greatful to receive this award after a win this week.

“The teams resilience and ability to stay together throughout the 40 minutes after being down in the first half shows we really came together to get the win!

“It was such a great feeling to be surrounded by these girls and I hope this gives us the momentum to put in some more good performances as the season goes on.”

Charnwood head coach Nick Moodey added: “Alex is a key player to the team this year and is a leader on and off the court, so it is great to see her getting the recognition of Player of the Week.

“The team this year has put in so much hard work this up until this point, so it was nice to pick up a win on the road.

“Our defensive intensity in the second half was what got us over the line in a good game against a talented Nottingham team.

“We’ve got two big games coming up heading into the festive period so we need to continue to keep putting the hard work in.”
