Summer Showcase – week 5 recap

The finish line is in sight for this year’s WEABL Summer Showcase, with just a few weeks remaining.

Week five is now in the books, with four games taking place and plenty of entertaining action across the country.

With wins for Barking, Charnwood and a pair of W’s for Copleston, the full list of week five results and top scorers can be found via the score ticker at the top of this page.

North Pool

Charnwood College Riders 82-72 The Sheffield College

Of the three scheduled North Pool games for week five, only Saturday’s clash between Charnwood and Sheffield survived, with the Riders claiming an 82-72 victory.

After trailing for a large portion of the first half, Charnwood went through the gears to build a double-digit lead as the second quarter wound down.

That advantage flirted with the 20 point mark early in the third, and although Sheffield fought back to trail by just one point with a little over eight minutes remaining, that as close as the visitors would come.

Katie Januszewska impressed for the Riders with 26 points, eight boards and four assists, whilst Abbey Whitehouse’s 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and six steals was the standout for Sheffield.

Box score

South Pool

Itchen College 69-87 Barking Abbey

That left the bulk of the week five action to the South Pool, where Barking managed to grab an 87-69 victory over Itchen.

Avenging their 78-76 home defeat back in week two, BA were happy to make amends here and had no problem dispatching the South coast programme.

Ines Goryanova pushed the London side forward with a game-high 30 points, as Paula Puzule added 23 more.

Faye Endean top scored for the hosts with 16 points.

Copleston High School 68-48 John Madejski Academy

Copleston began their two-win week with a W over John Madejski Academy on Wednesday, coming out on top 68-48.

The Suffolk side enjoyed a slender five point lead after the opening quarter, but grabbing the second 17-9 and the third 17-10 created a lead that JMA wouldn’t be able to overcome in the final 10 minutes.

Saruna Gudza top scored for the hosts with 19 points and Susannah Rafiu enjoyed an 11 point, 15 rebound double-double.

Jessie Ford has 22 for JMA.

Copleston High School 85-64 Oaklands College

Win #2 of the week saw Copleston knock off Oaklands College 85-64.

The victory was powered by Ella Pearson, who notched 32 points.

Kizzy Spence-Mussington continued her recent good form for the visitors, she closed on 18 points as Daisy Porter added 14 more.
