Oaklands v Nottingham

Oaklands College recorded a 108-50 victory over Nottingham Academy in the Elite Eight stage of the WEABL playoffs.

Kata Fulop led all scorers with 31 points, with Tia Freeman (20), Krisztina Nagy (17) and Maja Gobi (14) all having double digit games.

The home side started on the front foot against the young Nottingham side making a 12-0 run across the opening 3 minutes before Brahe Ashton hit nice step back 3 for the traveling team.

However, Oaklands followed this with another 10-0 run and continued their dominance through to the half time leading the game 59-21. The Wolves were led by Fulop’s dominance on the boards and around the rim, the game’s leading scorer getting 22 of her 31 in the first half.

Nottingham responded in the second half with renewed energy and they had some strong moments behind their back court duo of Ashton and Ines Guerreiro.

The Wolves responded in kind and ended the third period with a 17-0 run to kill the contest and secure their way to the semi-finals. Nottingham’s season ended strongly as they tied the final quarter 17-17 as Oaklands rotated and started prep for next Wednesday.

Coach Lee Ryan said: “That was a really professional performance by the players today. We knew Nottingham had some confident players when given time and space but you never know how the cross over games will go in the playoffs.

“We will need to step up the gears next week but the players are relishing the contest against Charnwood. Nottingham will continue to get better, they are well coached and will get stronger next season I have no doubt.”

Fulop added “The team played well today, we achieved our goal of making the semi-finals so I am happy. As a team we moved the ball and found our advantages, I wanted to have a strong game rebounding today and i’m happy I was able to do that to help the result.

“In this team we create so much for each other that its about finishing and we all did that today. We are really looking forward to the next round, work starts now.”

For Nottingham, Brahe Ashton had 12 points with contributions from Ines Guerreiro and Abigail Pendergast with 11 each.

Oaklands travel to Charnwood next Wednesday for a semi-final clash that is bound to be explosive. Nottingham get to work on making steps forward in their second season in the WEABL next campaign.
