Oaklands College vs Nottingham Academy

Oaklands College defeated Nottingham Academy 87-37 in the final game in Round 1 of this season’s WEABL league Championship.

Krisztina Nagy top scored with 23 points with Aliz Varga adding 21, while Tia Freeman and Ciara Belsham had 11 and 10 points respectively.

A slow opening few minutes saw the home side hold a narrow margin before a 10-0 run half way through the quarter put the Hertfordshire based academy in control, despite some good guard play by Nottingham’s Brahe Ashton and captain Ines Guerreiro.

After a cagy second quarter, the score at the half was 45-26 to the home side. It was Oaklands’ guard Nagy who led the second half push as the home side forced the issue defensively allowing only 11 points, whilst pouring in 23 points personal.

A 17-0 spurt in the third period put the tie well and truly to bed as both teams started to look towards the next phase of this season’s competition.

Oaklands Coach Lee Ryan commented: “We are pleased to come through this first stage with two solid performances, but we have to make improvements if we want to keep being successful.

“Nottingham have some strong guards and competed right to the end, I am sure they will be successful in the next phase of the competition.”

Ashton led the visitors with 13 points, closely followed by Guerreiro’s 12 points.

Nottingham now move into the qualification pool for the WEABL league play as they face Myerscough on the road next week. Oaklands will re-open the campaign in the New Year when the league has been set.
