Oaklands College vs John Madejski Academy

Oaklands College lost out 47-77 to the high-flying John Madejski in an exciting WEABL Southern Conference contest in Hertfordshire on Wednesday 28 November.

A strong JMA side had the answers in the contest which saw an improved performance from the Oaklands side that have had a tough start to this season’s WEABL campaign.

A competitive first quarter saw JMA hold a narrow six point lead, as the game remained close until JMA, led by dominant centre Anabel Latorre Ciria, went on a 7-0 run and gave the travelling team some clear water going into the break.

Oaklands continued to be competitive in the second half, behind the strong showing of Khia Lee on her way to a team-high 12 points, but the attacking ability of JMA continued to break down the home side’s defense. Another 8-0 run in the third ended the contested but it took another 12-0 run in the fourth by JMA to finally put a persistent Oaklands to bed.

Oaklands Coach Lee Ryan had this to say about the game, “Without question our best game of the season so far against JMA, a favourite in the WEABL this year. I’m pleased to see the players starting to understand the level required for this league and holding their own in periods of the game; we have more work to do to get closer to teams but I’m confident we will get there this season.

“JMA are strong with lots of international experience, they are dangerous off the dribble and ultimately we couldn’t stop their inside presence.”

Oaklands were led my Khia Lee’s 12 points, closely followed by 11 points from Maisie Moore.

JMA’s Anabel Latorre Ciria led all scorers on her way to a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Guards Carmen Segura Moreno and Gabriella Sanchez-Parodi Reveron made significant contributions with 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Oaklands play Barking Abbey School next Wednesday in a rearranged fixture, whilst JMA will be on the road again against rivals Itchen College.
