Oaklands College v Myerscough College

Oaklands College welcomed Myerscough for the long journey south on Wednesday afternoon and it was the home team that came out on top with a 69-52 win.

Krisztina Nagy had 24 points to lead Oaklands with Tia Freeman and Kata Fulop putting in 17 and 10 points respectively.

The home side came out rampant as they jumped to a 17-5 first quarter lead behind their backcourt duo Nagy and Freeman. The traveling side found some renewed confidence in the second quarter and held Oaklands to 9 points to close the gap to eight at the half.

The second half was a much closer contest with teams exchanging scores in transition and keeping the game in check, that was until Oaklands opened the last period with a 14-0 run to put the game to rest. Myerscough showed some spirited play right to the end behind captain Milly Knowles.

Head Coach Lee Ryan commented: “We’ve had a slow start in the WEABL so far this season so it was pleasing to see us start the game like we did today.

“Fast, committed and locked in on the defensive task; thats the first time we’ve seen our practice level in a game. Myerscough have some talented players and they brought the game back to us in the second half, the run in the fourth was important to get the win today.

“The challenge for the team moving forward is to extend the length of time we can sustain that level of play.”

Myerscough were led by Knowles’ 15 points with Shauna Harrison adding 11 points.

Next Wednesday, Oaklands make the long road trip to Loreto, whilst Myerscough will host COLA.
