Oaklands College 42 v 65 John Madejski Academy

Oaklands College hosted John Madejski Academy on Wednesday afternoon at the Hertfordshire based College’s newly reopened Sport Zone facility, but the hosts couldn’t mark the occasion with a win as they fell to a 65-42 loss.

Oaklands opened the game with a 4-0 burst and the signs were promising for a first league win of the new season, however JMA had the answers and it was the ever dominant Anabel Latorre Ciria who established a lead for the travelling team that they never rescinded.

Oaklands remained in touching distance through the first half with Jocie Leavold and Louise Rouse leading the way however the Spanish trio of Latorre, Carmen Segura Moreno and Sitota Gines Espinosa keep the visitors in the driving seat, scoring 22 of their sides 33 at the half.

A late injury to Rouse, which forced her to leave the game, also saw Oaklands chances leave with her as JMA rattled off a 18-0 run in the middle of the third period that ended the contest. Leavold continue to score for the home side as she tried to mount a comeback but despite her game high 18 points personal it wasn’t enough and the away side held on for a convincing road win.

Lead coach Lauren Milligan said “There is a lot to learn from the game. The players know they have more potential and I can feel the frustration after these first two results. We need all 12 to be ready to contribute and play with understanding of our strategy, we have great moments but we have to build on them. JMA did a great job of out competing us today, they had a really nice balance inside and out and used their experience last year well.”

Oaklands Jocie Leavold led all scorers with 18 points but it was JMA’s balanced contribution that was the difference with Sitota Gines Espinosa & Carmen Segura Moreno finishing with 15 a piece closely followed by Gaia Liberali’s 12 and Anabel Latorre Ciria’s 11.

Next week Oaklands travel to CoLA seeking their first win whilst JMA look to continue their strong start by hosting Itchen College.
