Oaklands College 43 – 69 Copleston High School

Oaklands College hosted Copleston in the WEABL yesterday, with the visiting side leaving victorious after a final score of 43-61.

Oaklands knew they had a tough battle as they looked to overturn the 44 point loss earlier in the season but Copleston didn’t let up in the opening part of the game. Some easy transition scoring led by Ella Pearson had Oaklands struggling to keep up with the pace. Pearson scored 10 of her 15 in the first quarter to give the away side a commanding 12-24 advantage.

The second quarter seemed to be another running game for the away side, with Copleston getting most of their points in the paint on the break. However, Oaklands started shooting the ball and showing signs of a way back in the game despite trailing 19-43 at the break.

In the third quarter Oaklands came out looking confident with early scores from Khia Lee, and the ever present Louise Rouse. Despite the effort they couldn’t close the gap, with Copleston doing just enough to keep the home side at arms length with the quarter ending 22-11.

Oaklands wanted to build on the success they had in the third quarter and came out attacking Copleston’s zone defence and turning stops into transition scores of their own. However, once again despite the run the game didn’t narrow enough for the Wolves. Copleston leaned on Esther Little in the final quarter to ensure the win as the player scored 8 of her team’s 10 points in the period.

Oaklands won the frame 12-10 and showed their improvement but they need to start games better to beat the WEABL’s leading sides.

Lead coach Lauren Milligan said: “The girls are stepping up each week and when you compare the score lines to start of the year the growth has been huge.

“However today we started too slow to make the game a contest to the end. We gave a good side too many easy transition scores and ultimately ran out of time once we made the adjustments needed. The goal is still a 40 minute performance.”

Oaklands were led by Louise Rouse’s 16 points with Khia Lee adding 10 points with a host of others adding small contributions.

Copleston had heavy scorers in Esther Little and Becky Hardwood-Bells with 20 a piece. Ella Pearson added 15 points and Charlotte Redhead shot 12 points as the four of them scored nearly all the away sides points.

Next week Oaklands travel to Itchen College whilst Copleston travel to JMA.
