Oaklands College v Charnwood College

Oaklands College tasted their first defeat in the WEABL this season as Charnwood College secured a 49-84 win on the road.

Ebony Horton led the way with a 25-point haul with Holly Winterburn adding a further 21 points in the win.

The home side were missing key players and were held to their lowest points tally of the season so far as Charnwood made 14 threes to record a big win for their playoff ambitions.

The short handed Oaklands were able to hold the visitors in a tight first quarter that ended 13-13. The second quarter started to open up, with Horton and Winterburn showing their experience throughout, they helped Charnwood to hold a nine-point advantage into the half time break.

The second half was a different story as Charnwood came out firing with back to back 3s by Horton. This formed part of a 19-2 run which took the belief away from the home side and finished the contest despite Oaklands finding some fight late in the periods. Charnwood ended comfortable winners as they secured their place in the top 4.

Coach Ryan reflected: “Today was an opportunity for players to step into leading roles, we had glimpses of confidence but its a learning opportunity for our first year players, especially in how to be consistent at this level.

“Tia (Freeman) was excellent as our captain and continued to push the Oaklands style. Sami (Brown) and Ciara (Belsham) responded to her charge at times, but we needed more today to beat a deep and confident Charnwood.

“If you let them get in a rhythm and shoot the 3 you’re in trouble, and we let them do that far to much today.”

Freeman top scored with 13 points with Belsham adding 12 and Brown on 11.

As the final games are resolved it looks like both teams will be making an appearance in the semi finals of this years WEABL for the second year in a row.
