John Madejski v City of London

Last year’s champions City of London Academy defeated John Madejski Academy 53-67 on the road in their first game of the season.

CoLA led the game in the first half by 21 points but with some determination and fight JMA closed the large gap and by the third quarter they were just 16 points down.

CoLA kept their performance going but JMA didn’t give up as the fourth quarter was coming to an end with Noa Marques Sanchez scoring seven points before the win was secured.

JMA Head Coach Blai Benlloch said: “We knew we were going to play against a strong team and the start of the game was not easy for us.

“But instead of giving up our girls fought and played hard and we arrived to the last quarter in a 10 point game.

“There are many things to improve on but we feel we are ready to compete against the best teams.

“One more experience to add to our girls journey as mature players and as a team.”

JMA’s scoring was relatively balanced with top scorer Paula Tarrega Romero scoring 15 points supported by Noa Marques Sanchez with 10 points. For the visitors, Maya Hyacienth played an important role with 11 points.

Both teams will he back in action in due course after all of the opening round of results are finalised.
