John Madejski Academy vs Oaklands College

John Madejski Academy win 69-49 against Oaklands College.

John Madejski Academy bounced back from last week’s defeat to Barking Abbey as they ran out the winners by 69 points to 49 on Wednesday afternoon behind 20 points from Saffie Jarju. JMA Head Coach Blai Benlloch was pleased to get back to winning ways as his team concluded their regular season games.

“It wasn’t our best performance today but it was important we won our final league game of the season before the play-offs to give us the best seed we can get for the quarter-finals. I was able to play some players extended minutes today which was pleasing and I felt they contributed well to our victory. We will now keep working hard and look forward to the post season next month,” said Benlloch.

The game started at a slow pace with the score at 6-4 to the hosts midway through the opening quarter and remained a nip and tuck affair until an 8-2 JMA run towards the end of the period ensured a 16-10 scoreline in favour of the home team after the first ten minutes. JMA only extended their lead a further point midway through the second quarter before a 13-2 run by the Reading outfit gave them a 37-20 half time lead, one they would not relinquish. The third quarter was a much tighter affair as Oaklands battled hard to get back into the game and a 9-3 run to end the stanza meant they were still in with a shot, trailing 52-35 with ten minutes remaining in the contest.

The visitors to Reading managed to get the deficit down to 11 with four minutes remaining in the game, with the score at 58-47 to the hosts. But JMA held firm, and finished the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to secure a well deserved 20 point victory, 69-49 to finish their WEABL season with seven wins and three losses.

Supporting Jarju’s 20 point haul was Paula Romero with 16 and Anabel Latorre with 12. For Oaklands, Louise Rouse led their attack with 16, Fionnuala Wharton had 13 and Khia Lee had 12.

JMA will now wait to find out their seeding for the play-offs next month whilst Oaklands will host City of London Academy before travelling to Southampton on Wednesday 6th March to take on Itchen College.
