John Madejski Academy vs Itchen College

John Madejski Academy opened their WEABL season with victory over Itchen College on Wednesday afternoon in Reading behind Carmen Segura Moreno’s 14 points.

JMA Head Coach Blai Benlloch was pleased to see his team record their first win of the season against Itchen College. He said,

“We are really pleased to win our first official game of the new season despite some difficulties in scoring in the opening quarter. However, from the second quarter onwards, I felt we started to control the game more especially from the defensive end. There are many things to improve but it is a good start for our group with time to grow as a team.”

The home team started the stronger as JMA opened up the contest with a 9-2 run before being pegged back by their visitors as Itchen finished the period with a 7-2 run of their own to trail 11-9 after the first ten minutes

11 missed free throws was the story of the second quarter for Itchen College as a JMA 13-2 run midway through the period really opened the game up as the hosts outscored their opponents 29-14 and headed into the locker room with a 40-23 half time advantage.

An 11-3 run to start the third quarter extended JMA’s lead to 25 points but a 9-0 run gave the visitors momentum heading into the final quarter with the score at 51-35 to the Reading based team.

Itchen closed the gap to 12 points at the beginning of the fourth period but another 13-2 run meant the eventual victors ensured a 66-44 scoreline as JMA secured their opening win.

Supporting JMA’s Carmen Segura Moreno was Gabriella Sanchez Parodi with 12 points and Paula Romero Tarrega with 10. For Itchen College, Heather Johnstone had 10, Caitlin Collier 9, and F. Endean 5.

JMA will host Copleston High in 2 weeks time on Wednesday 10th October in Reading whilst Itchen College travel to Barking Abbey next Wednesday 3rd October.
