John Madejski Academy vs City of London Academy

John Madejski Academy survived a second half comeback from the City of London Academy on Wednesday afternoon to hold on for a well fought 63-56 victory behind 15 points from Anabel Latorre Ciria.

Head Coach Blai Benlloch was pleased to see his team secure another important win especially after a demanding weekend in the National League. He said, “We knew this was going to be a tough game against a very good team as we have had some really close games with them before. After this weekend’s finals, it was great to see us continue our good play and despite CoLA making a big comeback, we did enough to win and that was really pleasing for me to see.”

The opening eight minutes of the game were a cagy affair with both teams struggling to get going, as CoLA led 9-8 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter, a lead they would take into the second period as they led 14-13 after the first ten minutes of action.

The game continued to be nip and tuck in the opening exchanges of the second quarter with both teams battling to get a foothold on the game. And it was the hosts who managed to break the deadlock first as at 23-23, the home team finished the period 16-2 to take a 39-25 lead into the half time interval.

The home team extended their lead during the first part of the third quarter and led 51-32 with only 15 minutes left to play. But the visitors to Reading were not done as a 12-2 to finish the period meant the arrears were reduced to nine, 55-46. CoLA continued their fightback and held their opponents scoreless in the first five minutes of the final quarter, but struggled to score themselves with the game finely poised at 55-50 with four minutes remaining in the contest. Both teams found scoring an issue in the final stages, and with CoLA having to foul late on to stop the clock, JMA were able to see out the win 63-56.

Supporting Anabel Latorre’s 15 points was Carmen Segura Moreno with 14 and Paula Romero Tarrega with 11. For CoLA, Maya Hyacienth led all scorers in the game with 16 points, with Megan Haines and Jade Guidolin-Duncan adding 10 a-piece.

JMA travel to Barking Abbey next Wednesday 30th January whilst City of London Academy host Copleston on the same day.
