John Madejski Academy v City of London Academy

JMA produced an awesome third quarter display to defeat City of London Academy 66-56 on Wednesday afternoon behind 25 points from Noa Sanchez Marques.

Supporting Noa Sanchez Marques, Paula Romero Tarrega had 19 points and Elena Palacios Amaral added 10 for the victorious home side.

Blai Benlloch was really pleased with his team’s performance and win.

“The girls did a great job this afternoon and despite being behind in the first half, they kept battling and we were able to see out the game and record an important win,” he said.

“CoLA is a really good team so to be able to win against them, especially after losing to them early on in the season by 30, we are very happy with today’s result.”

It was the visitors that started the game the brightest as CoLA opened the quarter with a 7-2 run and with the score at 4-11 midway through the opening period looked in complete control.

However, the hosts rallied and made an 11-0 before CoLA answered with six points of their own which meant the score was 15-17 after the first ten minutes of action.

The second quarter followed suit as both teams exchanged scores throughout but and an 8-0 from JMA and a 7-2 run from CoLA meant the teams headed into the locker room with all to play for with the visitors leading 29-33 at the half time interval.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point in the game as JMA compiled a huge 16-0 run midway through hitting four three pointers with Paula Romero Tarrega draining three of those for her team. JMA had the biggest lead of the game at 51-38 but CoLA were not done.

The visitors finished the quarter with an 8-0 in return but JMA held the lead 51-44 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

The fourth quarter remained nip and tuck but CoLA could only reduce the deficit to 7 at 59-52 but it was the hosts who would prevail and pick up a memorable victory as they ran out worthy winners 66-56 against a very good CoLA outfit.

For CoLA, Maya Hyacienth led her team with 19 points, Megan Haines had 17, and Mia Jaye Sarkodee-Adoo added 10.

JMA are back in action next Wednesday when they travel to face Barking Abbey, whilst CoLA host Copleston High School on the same day.
