Itchen College 44 v 87 Barking Abbey

Itchen College hosted Barking Abbey for their first WEABL game of the season as the London side claimed a comfortable 87-44 win.

Despite a productive pre-season for the Itchen girls it was not to be in the opener. Barking Abbey’s size looked to be a problem from the off and that proved to be the case. Tamara Fornillier Onadeko and Lily Annim lead the away team to a demanding 26-10 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, with Odeneke scoring 12 of her eventual 18 points in the opening frame.

Some defensive adjustments and better rotations helped the home side in the 2nd, they were able to hold Barking to just 9 points. However, Itchen were unable to capitalise on the opportunity due to a host of missed opportunities around the basket.

The 3rd quarter began in much the same way the 1st one had, with Kian Omer-Jones taking over both defensively and offensively. Gaining numerous steals the talented wing enjoyed a number of fast break scores for 13 3rd quarter points.

Fortunately for the hosts, Lauren Green and Caitlin Collier began to find their scoring touch in the 3rd as both players looked to build some momentum. Going into the 4th quarter, Barking held onto their big lead and closed out the game with the help of Anna Trett bombing four deep 3 pointers.

Caitlin Collier lead all scorers for Itchen with 14 points while Tamara Fornillier Onadeko finished with 18 for the guests.

Itchen College Coach Vicky Milner said: “I’m disappointed with our team’s performance. I think we have a lot more to give and have shown we are capable of more throughout the pre-season. Defensively we can be a much better team and need to work on our rotations ready for our next game. Barking are a great programme, and they were organised from the off. Jumping on our mistakes and finding the open player more often than not. We will review the game, get to practice and improve ready for the next one.”

Itchen’s next game is a road trip to JMA Rockets on 16 October, while Barking are back in action next week as they host Oaklands.
