Itchen Sixth Form College vs Copleston High School

WEABL league leaders Copleston High School visited bottom of the league Itchen College this Wednesday. After losing 86-43 in the first encounter, Itchen knew it was going to be a tough game, especially with starting guards Luisa San Juan and Anabella Villalobos out with injury. And despite a much improved effort from the Itchen ladies, Copleston won the game 66-59.

Itchen started the first quarter well, scoring in transition and managing to take the first period 17- 14 behind 6 points from Louise Pilley. However, it would be Copleston who responded well in the second quarter turning on the defensive pressure resulting in steals and scores, with Ella Pearson scoring 8 of her 16 points. The Copleston team continued to pressurise Itchen in the third quarter resulting in a 10 – 0 run lead by Esther Little and Charlotte Redhead.

Down 48-39, the Itchen team continued to work hard and attempted to stay in the game with Charlotte Finn and Lauren Green combining for 12 points to bring their team within 7 in the closing stages. Unfortunately Esther Little had other plans, as she dropped 25 points in the second half alone which proved too much for the smaller sized Itchen team to handle.

Coach Vicky Milner commented on the game saying, “It was a great game for us today, we competed for 3 out of 4 quarters and looked confident on offence. With injuries and illness we have been struggling but today we showed real grit and character as well as staying composed when we needed too. Ipswich are a great programme with lots of home grown talent and with Esther Little they have one of the hardest players in the league to guard, credit to them to close the game out when it mattered.”

Lauren Green and Charlotte Finn had 10 points a piece for Itchen College, while Copleston were lead by Esther Little with 31 points.
