Itchen Sixth Form College 34 – 62 John Madejski Academy

Itchen College went down 62-34 to John Madejski Academy in the first game of 2020, with Itchen struggling against the Rockets’ zone defence following a strong 1st quarter.

The first quarter saw Itchen take an early 12 – 8 lead with Charlotte Finn contributing three 3 pointers to open up the scoring. JMA’s dominance on the boards proved to much for Itchen and despite Lauren Green’s efforts on the offensive end, the home team found themselves down 21-17 in the first quarter.

JMA’s zone defence caused problems for the hosts in the second quarter, with no transition opportunities the Itchen team couldn’t find their way to the basket and only managed to score 3 second quarter points to JMAs 18, 9 of these from great shooting by Carmen Segura Moreno.

The second half was a low scoring affair for both teams, with some great defence on display. However, JMA’s patience and ball movement provided them with high percentage shots while Itchen continued to struggle against the zone defence shown by JMA.

Coach Milner commented on the game: “We always knew we would be up against it today – playing the best team in the league, but today we were not happy with her our performance.

“We know we can do a better job both ends of the court.

“Unfortunately right now we can still not perform for a whole 40 minutes, this is something that we need to work on as a team and be in the right mindset to compete against these teams at this level.”

Charlotte Finn would eventually top score for Itchen with 19 points, as Lauren Green added seven more. Carmen Segura Moreno also finished on 19 for JMA, supported by Anabel Latorre on 15 points.
