Itchen College vs City of London Academy

Itchen College hosted CoLA this Wednesday in the WEABL Southern Conference. A gritty performance from the home team helping them keep in touching distance of a talented CoLA side. CoLA showed their quality when it mattered and closed the game out with a 50-34 win.

The first quarter saw some intense defence from both sides making it hard for both teams to score, Esther Oluade opened the scoring for the CoLA side after two minutes of play and from there it was basket for basket with the quarter ending 7-6 in the visitors favour.

The second quarter was much the same before CoLA went on a 10-0 run with Megan Haines and Amelia Sandie combining for 9 points. Luisa San Juan then came alive helping Itchen gain some scoring momentum with 8 points in the second quarter.

Despite some great defensive efforts by Anabella Villalobos and Heather Johnstone, the Itchen team were not able to hold CoLA in the third quarter, as Maya Hyacienth found her rhythm with 8 third quarter points and helped the away side pull away. However, Itchen’s determination and grit did not fall and the home team battled to the end putting on a great defensive effort and moving the ball well on offence.

Itchen coach Vicky Milner commented after the game saying, “I was really pleased with how these girls stepped up today, hindered with illness and injuries they battled on and had each other’s back throughout. Right now we need to improve our ability to finish near the basket and make open looks but defensively we were solid. To hold a team of CoLA’s quality to 50 points is a great effort.”

Itchen were lead in scoring by Luisa San Juan with 15 points, Maya Hyacienth had 10 points for CoLA.
