Itchen College v Oaklands College

Itchen College got their first win of the WEABL at home against Oakland’s College this Wednesday. Losing by 11 away the Itchen side needed to win by 11 more to gain a play-off seed, unfortunately they fell one short winning 67-57, seeing Oakland’s progress to the play offs.

Itchen started strong in the first quarter taking a 15-4 lead after 5 minutes behind 2 big 3s from Luisa San Juan. A quick time out by Oakland’s resulted in the away team coming out strong and going on a 7 – 0 to close the gap, with Itchen only able to make 2 more points in the first quarter the home side took a narrow 17-14 lead at the end of the first.

Oakland’s continued to keep their stride in the 2nd quarter, trading baskets with the home side keeping the game close. Louise Pilley and Charlotte Finn took the home side on an 8-0 run to extend the lead and help Itchen take a 38-31 point lead in the half time.

Knowing an 11 plus point lead was needed the home team tried to pile on the pressure in the third quarter with a full court press. However, Khia Lee took full advantage of this in the taking the ball strong to the basket and finishing well, closing the gap 52-47. Itchen continued to press in the 4th and managed to increase the gap to 13 with a 64-51 lead with 1 minute to play. A late 7 – run, with scores from Khia Lee and Louise Rouse, allowed Oakland’s to reduce the deficit to 7. Unfortunately, a late 3 pointer by Luisa San Juan was not enough to secure a play-off place, with a 67-57 win.

Itchen were led in scoring by Lauren Green with 16 points and Luisa San Juan with 15 points. Whilst Oaklands Khia Lee had 17 points.

Coach Vicky Milner commented on the game “It was a bitter sweet ending to the WEABL regular season, we gained our first win but were disappointed we did not stretch the lead far enough. The girls have worked hard this season and despite injuries, tough losses they have continued to fight and compete in an extremely talented league.”
