Itchen College 44 – 72 Copleston High School

Itchen College hosted Copleston for their last home game of the season yesterday, with the visitors taking a 72-44 win to maintain their position of 2nd in the league.

Despite gaining some confidence and momentum from last week’s home win against Oaklands, the size and shooting ability of Copleston was to much for the Itchen side.

The first quarter saw Charlotte Finn put the Itchen side 6-2 up inside the first 2 minutes with a pair of 3s,  this sparked an 9-0 run by the visitors lead by Charlotte Redhead with who hit a trio of three pointers in the first quarter.

Itchen continued to battle and and managed to find a basket late in the first to see the quarter out down 19-12.

Going into the second quarter, the home side refused to go down easily, as had happened in the past. Some great intensity on defence by the under sized Itchen team resulted in stops and the ability to run in transition.

Seven points from Caitlin Collier helped the home team narrow the gap to 2 points with 2 minutes to play. However, Copleston responded with a clinical shooting display, including a 3 on the buzzer from Cameron Taylor-Willis. The late basket put the visitors up 35-25 going into half time.

The third quarter proved to be the game for the visitors who came out in a full court press, causing problems for the home side and easy baskets for the Copleston.

A quick time out saw Itchen get back in their stride and onto the scoreboard with Lauren Green finding the basket but Copleston were not about to let the home side back in the contest.

Charlotte Redhead once again showing how well she can shoot the ball with a further 12 points in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was closer, with the home side showing their resilience and togetherness by refusing to back down from the talented Copleston. The defensive pressure increased and the home side did a better job of clearing the boards.

The visitors continued to show their dominance from the 3 point line though, with Redhead hitting another three triples to take her total to 11 in the game.

Itchen coach Vicky Milner commented on the game: “Copleston are such a hard team for us to match up with, they have a lot of height – we have none!

“They can all shoot the 3 ball and every time we play them it is a different player that steps up. Today Charlotte Redhead shot the ball extremely well and they did an excellent job of getting her the ball.

“I was really pleased with how our girls played, they showed some fight and stuck together throughout.

“The third quarter was disappointing but the other 3 shows how far we have come this season, the league has been tough but the character building and resilience these ladies have learnt through the season will help them in the future.

“We are really proud of them for staying together and competing day in and day out.”

Caitlin Collier top scored for Itchen on 15, and Charlotte Finn added 13. Copleston’s top scorer was Charlotte Redhead with an impressive 38 points.
