Itchen College 44 – 74 City of London Academy

Itchen hosted City of London this Wednesday. With Itchen yet to pick up a win they were fired up to make an impression on CoLA from the tip. Despite a great start the Itchen side found CoLA to much on the inside and fell to a 74-44 defeat.

Early in the first quarter the home side set the tone defensively, limiting CoLA to outside shots and applying pressure with a full court press. Despite the defensive intensity the Itchen side were unable to capitalise on the offensive end, with easy baskets and free throws being missed. After 5 minutes being played the score stayed at 7-7. CoLA then put their foot on the pedal with some great ball movement finding the open player, this lead to a 10-3 run to finish the quarter and the Itchen side trailed 17-10.

Despite Caitlin Colliers 3 x 3 pointers in the 2nd quarter the Itchen side could not convert enough offensively to stay in touch with CoLA. Some excellent finishing and shooting by A. Sandie left the hosts with a lot of work to do at half time.

The second half was much the same, with Itchen unable to keep up the intensity and concentration needed on defence to limit a big CoLA side. The visitors dominated the boards and converted many second chance points and worked the ball well in transition. Lauren Green turned up for Itchen in the 3rd quarter scoring 9 of her 14 points but it was not enough to help the hosts claw back the game.

Coach Milner commented on the game “It was frustrating that we can not keep up the same intensity defensively and stay focused for the whole game. Again we competed well for a good 25 minutes but the other 15 minutes resulted in big runs for the visitors. CoLA are a very well organised and coached team, their zone caused us a lot of problems today and was ultimately the swinging point of the game. We will go back to the drawing board and hope to come out stronger next week.”
