Copleston v Barking Abbey

Copleston hosted National Champions Barking Abbey on Monday in an entertaining game between two good teams with the London side coming out on top, 73-96.

BA were led by 24 points from Armanu with Savannah Wilkinson adding 11 and Chloe Gaynor 10.

Barking came fully loaded, with their strongest line up in the knowledge that a win would secure third place in the division and they took a 15-point lead into the huddle after the first period.

However, from that point on it was a back-and-forth affair with Copleston’s Ashleigh Pink matching the scoring of Savannah Wilkinson and Armanu for Abbey. Copleston reduced the lead to eleven at the half time buzzer.

The third saw BA extend their lead to 14 with some hot shooting from beyond the arc while Freya Cooney and Jasmine Tebbit got it going for Copleston.

The final period saw Copleston again eat into the lead before Barking found top gear and put the game to bed. The shooting of Romanian guard, Armanu was exceptional as she connected on four from long range to eventually give Barking the 96-73 win.

“Our girls played their hearts out today and for the most part, this was an excellent game between two good teams,” said Head Coach, Nick Drane.

“I am pleased with how we bounded back after a tough loss last week and I am confident that we can compete with anybody.

“You have to tip your cap to Barking and Karen, they are an excellent team both in terms of individual talent and team organisation.

“If they have this line up throughout the playoffs they are my favourite to win the WEABL championship.”

Ashleigh Pink led Coplesaton with 23 points, she was helped by 16 from Freya Cooney and 14 from Maya Price.

Both teams have qualified for the playoffs and are on the road next week in the first round of the post season. Copleston travel to number one seeded Charnwood while BA face Myerscough.
