Copleston High School vs Oaklands College

Copleston walked away triumphant with an 80-48 victory over Oaklands College on the road.

Oaklands College, who’s young side continue to show improved performances in the second half of the campaign, couldn’t handle the fire power and strength of Copleston in the early goings of the game. The Away team took a commanding lead in the first quarter 27-6 points behind 8 points a piece from Ella Pearson and Cameron Taylor-Willis. The home team rallied and showed they are capable of competing against the leagues best, emphasised by the two contrasting half scores (17-47 first half compared to 21-33 in the second half), but Copleston showed experience when it mattered and there was no chance of a comeback.

Copleston continue to show championship aspirations this season and for Oaklands the education continues, something Coach Lee Ryan reflected on after the game, “We are growing in this league, its a great experience for the players and they are starting to get comfortable with the intensity and demand of the WEABL. We found a way to compete in the second half by attacking and being aggressive on the break, but we are still chasing a game where we can do it for 40 minutes. Copleston are very strong, they have some individuals that can take a game at any moment, the playoffs will be interesting this season for them.

Copleston were Lead by Cameron Taylor-Willis who dropped 20 points, whilst Becky Harwood-Bells added a strong 19 points. The home side were lead by back court duo Sami Brown and Fionnuala Wharton, the latter taking to the court for the first time this season following injury. Brown finished with 11 points and Wharton with 12 behind some impressive perimeter shooting.

Oaklands host Barking Abbey on January 16th, in what will be another tough test for the young Wolves, whilst Copleston next play JMA in what might give some indications of who could emerge from the South Conference come playoff time.
