Copleston High School vs Itchen College

Copleston High School moved to 4-0 at the top of the WEABL Southern Conference with a dominant 86-43 win against a talented Itchen College team.

Copleston started the game at pace with Becky Harwood-Bellis, playing her first academy game after a long injury lay off, connecting on twelve first quarter points as the Suffolk side opened up a 20-7 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter was much closer, with the hosts winning the period by just three points. Luisa San Juan got going for Itchen, collecting seven points in the period while Great Britain international Cameron Taylor-Willis made a pair of three-pointers on her way to nine in the quarter as Copleston took a 41-25 lead into the half-time interval.

It was clear in the third quarter that Copleston had upped their defensive intensity, winning the period 34-10 with Esther Little and Charlotte Redhead combining for seventeen points in the period, while Harwood-Bellis was again on fire from down-town, connecting on another pair of triples. Copleston took a 75-35 lead into the game’s final stanza.

The final quarter was a low scoring affair, as Copleston took the period 11-8, running away with a final score of 86-43.

Copleston Coach Nick Drane said, “I thought we did an excellent job in the second half especially, and it’s another win in what is a very tough WEABL competition.”

Drane continued, “It was fantastic to see Becky not only in the line-up today, but to see just how much she will bring to this team. She has shown phenomenal character while not playing, so to go out there and play like that in her first game was a real boost for her and the whole team.”

Becky Harwood-Bellis led the way for Copleston with 20 points, while Cameron Taylor-Willis had another stellar performance with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Charlotte Redhead added 18 points of her own, as Esther Little continued to dominate all over the court with a triple-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Itchen were led by 15 points from Luisa San Juan in the loss.

Both sides are without a game next week, as Copleston will wait until 19 December to host Barking Abbey School, while Itchen next take to the floor on 5 December when they host John Madejski Academy.
