City of London Academy 62 – 38 Itchen College

City of London Academy welcomed Itchen College for the home leg of this season’s head to head, with the hosts emerging victorious 64-38, weathering a spirited fight from the visitors.

The first quarter opened up with CoLA’s Emilie Black showing why she’s enjoying a breakout month in January, scoring the first five points for CoLA, however Itchen’s young team came roaring back to take an early 6-5 lead with baskets from the impressive Lauren Green and Heather Johnstone.

This sparked the most telling run of the game as Alecia Mansell igniting her team with outstanding defence and getting to the basketball on offence, leaving CoLA with a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter was a similar affair with Itchen refusing to go away, resisting CoLA’s defensive pressure to keep it close, the quarter score again ended 16-10 to the home side, leaving the score 32-20 to CoLA

The third quarter saw CoLA get off to a great start with Black leading the charge and outstanding defence from centre Shanice Flitton. Charlotte Finn continued to push the visitors and they showed great spirit to keep the score manageable going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth was again dominated by CoLA in a lowering scoring period, it saw MJ Sarkodee-Adoo increase her scoring output for the game and CoLA extend their lead to twenty six points for a final score of 64-32

CoLA assistant coach and player development lead, Brian Nguru commented: “First of all we’d like to credit Itchen on their girls’ spirit, we had a goal to win every quarter and although we did that, they made it difficult for forty minutes and played to the final buzzer.

“I felt today was one of our best performances of the season, we were especially pleased for our girls who had breakout games in Zainab Yellow, Alecia Mansell and Shanice Flitton. We’ve been carrying some key injuries all season so it’s nice to see other girls step up”

CoLA had very even scoring in this game, lead by veteran Mia Jaye Sarkodee-Adoo with 13 points, whilst Adaobi Nebuwa and Emilie Black both ended with 12 points. Itchen were led in scoring by Lauren Green with 13 points and supported by Caitlyn Collier with 5 points personal.

Next week Itchen will host Oaklands College whilst CoLA have a week off and then resume at home against league leader JMA Rockets on February 5th.
