City of London Academy v Barking Abbey

City of London Academy fell to defending champions Barking Abbey in their first loss of the WEABL campaign on Wednesday afternoon, 36-56.

Chloe Gaynor top scored with nine points in a balanced attack from the visitors with Charlotte Ellmore adding eight points, while CoLA were led by Chandera Jones-Aryeh’s game-high 12 points.

The game started off a cagey see-saw affair that saw both teams trade jabs but neither team exactly making a claim to dominate that game. A coast to coast buzzer beating layup by Kadija Conteh managed to level things up for CoLA at 11-11 to end the first quarter.

The second quarter was dominated by the Essex outfit winning it 14-6 to take a 6 point lead into the half time break, with big three point shots being hit by Teresa Da Silva and Tao Armanu keeping the team from central London trailing at the break.

The second half opening with a Ladun Akako triple which brought CoLA within five points and seemed like it was going to be a spark to get CoLA back in it however a three point play the old fashioned way for Eunika Edwards and, quick scores from Imani Whittington and Zoe Willis ensured Barking pulled away to earn themselves a 13 point lead going into the final stanza.

CoLA’s attempt to get back into it failed early in the fourth as dominant inside play from Gaynor and Abigail Johnson saw Barking jump out to a twenty point lead mid way through the quarter which they never relinquished.

CoLA Head Coach Jackson Gibbons said: “Credit to Barking, they looked like the national champions today and anyone will struggle to contend with them on that form. Our girls will focus and regroup for our next game as today just wasn’t our day.

CoLA have now finished their regular season games with a record of 9-1 whilst BA at 2-3 and will play Rydens on March 1 as they aim to continue their push for a top-four finish.
