Charnwood College Riders 73-55 Derby Trailblazers Academy

It was a shooting battle between Charnwood and Derby today. Charnwood started the game off
strong with back to back made three pointers from Ashante Richards, who finished the game
with 12 points. Derby struggled to find scores againsts Charnwood ⅔ zone ending the first
quarter down by 10. Charnwood continued to maintain their lead throughout the second quarter
with tough scores from Alex Baker, who finished as leading scorer with 15 points. Derby
however was not going away, Anneliese Rountree put on a great shooting display and top
scored for her team with 13 points. A solid first half performance saw Charnwood go into
halftime up 12.

It was Derby who came out strong at the start of the third with multiple transition scores in the
first two minutes, quickly cutting Charnwoods 12 point lead to only 6. Charnwood struggled to
guard Derbys pass and cut offence with the team shooting very well from mid-range. However
Charnwood did not stop putting up a fight, Hannah Dawson made some tough baskets with 9 of
her 11 points being scored in the second half. Derby made it clear they were not backing down
when a 3-pointer from Neve Marvil and a transition score from Natasha Barker tied the game at
43-43. With only 6 seconds to go Charnwoods Sasha Lecuyer sunk a 3-pointer just pass the
halfway line to send the riders into the fourth with a three point lead.

With momentum in Charnwood’s favour they started off the fourth quarter strong. Charnwood’s
first five points came from Lecuyer, who was a great spark for the riders off the bench, finishing
the game on 10 points. Derby held on in the first few minutes of the fourth with back to back
made pull-ups from Miya Kelly, however Charnwood proved too tough to stop out scoring Derby
by 15 in the fourth. Charnwood finished the game with a victory 73-55.

‘It was a good team performance from us today’, mentioned head coach Krumesh Patel, ‘our
girls executed well out there, despite our third quarter dip I was proud of how we bounced back
in the fourth. When we play hard and with energy we are very good, our challenge this year will
be to do that for a full 40 minutes.’

Charnwood travel to Derby next week where the Trailblazers will host a re-match.
