Charnwood College Riders 55 – 65 Nottingham Academy Wildcats

Short handed Charnwood Riders saw their first loss of WEABL campaign, going down 65-55. With two starters out and a Nottingham team on a roll, it made for an eventful evening in the Midlands derby.

The visitor came out strong with a big couple of and 1s, along side some lapses of concentration from Charnwood allowed a couple of wide open threes. This saw coach Patel call a time out with a 15-1 deficit. A spark from shades off the bench saw them cut the lead to 21-14 at the end of the first.

An early three from Molly James immediately saw the deficit drop for the hosts. However Nottingham’s fierce offensive transition saw the lead push back out to 10 points. Ashante Richard got some rhythm going for Charnwood as it was back to back threes from Molly James to tie the game going in to half at 36-36.

A strong quarter from Nottingham on the defensive end saw Charnwood score just 1 point in the third period. Offensive rebounding from the away team led to some easy scores along side some easy transition scores allowed them to open up the lead, 55-37.

It was a slightly better offensive period for the home side getting the lead down to 6 points. However a dominate inside presence from the visitor and some great defence saw the visitor with a victory of 55-65.

Coach Patel wasn’t best pleased with both the 1st and the 3rd quarter: “we have to perform better for 40 minutes. Scoring was an issue for us in the third and we need to find a way to be better on that end and not have mental lapses. Credit to Nottingham who came out very aggressive and played extremely well.”

Charnwood just have one game left against the Mystics, however winning the head to head has secured the top spot in Northern Conference.
