#1 Charnwood College 58 – 66 #4 Barking Abbey

#1 seeds Charnwood crashed out of the post season at the Elite Eight stage following a 66-58 upset against #4 seeds Barking Abbey.

It was a tough battle between both teams, despite Charnwood having two of their players leading all scorers, it was Barking’s hard fought second chance opportunities that won them the game.

The first quarter saw Charnwood take a small lead with a quick 3 from Molly James and a transition score from Kacey Cox. However a barrage of offensive rebounds from the visitors saw the game turn in favour of the visitors. It remained a close contest throughout the first half, Charnwood hit shots but struggled to get stops, with the hosts down 4 going into half time.

Barking came out hot in the second half knocking down 3/5 3 point attempts in the first 2 minutes. Charnwood continued to struggle to contain Barking’s aggressive attack and kick offence. This saw the visitors build a lead by as many as 10 points as the 4th quarter loomed.

However Charnwood did show some fight left in the final frame, cutting the lead to 5 with a couple of forced turnovers and a transition score from Lauren Dabbs and a quick 3 from James. Barking did however find an answer with a big score from Kuzmanovic stretching the lead back to 7. Charnwood had some good looks in the final minutes but were unable to convert.

“It was a rough day for us today,” mentioned Charnwood coach Haley, “We didn’t execute our game plan today, and huge credit to Barking Abbey, they punished us for it.

“We as a group have to understand that to win games we need to put a full 40 minutes together. We still have other competitions to focus on and we will bounce back and learn from this.”

Barking’s victory means they now advance to the WEABL Final Fours, earning a trip #2 seeds Copleston.
