WEABL recap – 18 January

Week 11 already in the WEABL, and gaps are appearing between those at the top of the conferences and those languishing down at the bottom.

Three games to analyse this week.

John Madejski Academy 42-52 Oaklands College

Another loss for JMA puts them at 0-7 for the season and firmly at the foot of the Southern Conference. Currently, Barking Abbey sit above them with three points but have three games in hand. There’s work to be done if the women from Reading are to avoid finishing last.

Oaklands picked up their first win of 2023 and move a step closer to being a .500 team (3-4).

Five-foot eight guard Daisy Porter had a fantastic performance for the Wolves, scoring 24, and her teammates Miriam Mendez and Kizzy Spence added 20 between them.

Eva Luzon (11) top scored for JMA.

Copleston High School 94-57 Barking Abbey

Olivia Forster scored 30 in this Copleston win against Barking Abbey, and just three days before her National Cup final appearance with Ipswich. Pre-match nerves? Not likely for the guard who is one of the best scorers in junior basketball.

Another three points for Copleston (4-2) puts them on 12 and second in the conference. But they have work to do if they’re to catch CoLA (6-1) in first (on 18 points) and avoid being pipped by Itchen Sixth Form College, who are on the same points, but with a game in hand.

BA guard Grace Strickland had a fantastic 24 points for the East Londoners. They face CoLA next week at home.

Charnwood College Riders 70-77 Nottingham Academy Wildcats

The only Northern Conference game this week saw a battle between the Riders and Wildcats, with Nottingham holding out to take the away win and three points.

It was tit-for-tat between Wildcats’ guard Macy Cook (27) and Riders’ forward Alex Shaw (33), who traded baskets the whole game.

Riders’ Erin Powell (27) and Con Selby (10) chipped in substantially, as did Yemisi Mefful (14) and Natalie Charity (13) for the Wildcats.

This result means that Nottingham have 12 points, the same as conference leaders Manchester Mystics (who have a game in hand). The race for the title is very much on.
