WEABL Recap – 23 February

Week 17 contained just a trio of games, but that didn’t make the results any less important as the regular season is nearly at a close.

Nottingham’s victory against Sheffield confirms the Midlands programme as the Northern conference winners for 2021/22, handing them a #1 seed for the post season in the process.

Hereโ€™s a round-up of all the action, and each score is clickable to access the top scorers/box score where available.

Nottingham Academy Wildcats 83-47 The Sheffield College

Nottingham Academy Wildcats continued their perfect season as they moved to 7-0 behind an 83-47 over second place The Sheffield College.

The victory gives the Northern conference title and a #1 seed in the playoffs to the Wildcats, who have thoroughly earned the accolade after a season filled with impressive performances.

The win against Sheffield came courtesy of 27 points from former Player of the Week Praise Egharevba, whilst Julia Borg top scored for Sheffield with 13.

Charnwood College Riders 78-65 Derby College Trailblazers

Charnwood added some spice to the playoff race as they beat local rivals Derby 78-65.

Riders’ standout forward Katie Januszewska was at it once again, this time scoring a team-high 28 points to help push her side to success.

Megan Lovatt did her bit for Derby, closing on 29 points, but it wouldn’t be enough.

The result now leaves Sheffield and Charnwood on nine points, with Derby and Manchester just one win behind on six. Only three of the four teams will be able to make the playoffs, though.

Oaklands College 47-41 Barking Abbey

Oaklands continue to put pressure on Copleston for the South’s #2 seed as they beat Barking 47-41.

The victory on Wednesday pulled the Wolves level on points with their Suffolk rivals, though Copleston do have a game in hand as things stand.

In a low-scoring affair, Miriam Carrasco-Menendez (12pts) and Daisy Porter (11pts) combined for nearly half of the host’s points, as Kizzy Spence added 8 more.

Fatmata Janneh’s 15 points wouldn’t be enough in reply as Barking continue to battle for the conference’s fourth and final playoff spot.
