Summer Showcase – week 3 preview

Back once again with a trio of games, the WEABL Summer Showcase rolls into week three.

With a pair of South Pool ties and a game between Sheffield and Manchester in the North, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Results and top scorers from weeks one and two can be seen on the score ticker at the top of this page.

North Pool

Manchester Mystics Academy v The Sheffield College

It’s Lancashire v Yorkshire in a Battle of the Roses this weekend as Sheffield head to Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

Both these teams are yet to enjoy a victory this summer, with Manchester currently sat at 0-1 and Sheffield at 0-2.

That shouldn’t stop these teams from putting on an exciting spectacle though, any contest with the likes of Charli Wroe, Julia Borg and reigning North Conference MVP Abbey Whitehouse is sure to be worthy viewing.

Tip is set for 1pm.

South Pool

City of London Academy v Itchen College

Both South Pool games are scheduled for tomorrow, getting underway with Itchen’s trip to CoLA at 2:30pm.

The London programme is making their first appearance in this year’s Showcase and have a tough match up against an Itchen side that are sitting pretty at 2-0.

Player of Week one Charlotte Finn continued her good form to also top score in Itchen’s victory over Barking last week, she currently averages a team-high 15.0PPG.

It remains to be seen what sort of lineup CoLA will elects to roll with tomorrow, but their squad contains Simona Henshaw, Emilie Black, Isi Ozzy-Momodu and Molly Lavin who have all excelled in WNBL Division One this season.

John Madejski Academy v Barking Abbey

After a surprise home loss to Itchen last week, Barking will aim to bounce back here as they head to JMA tomorrow at 4:45pm.

It was a narrow defeat for the London side as Sara Tarr’s late basket sealed their fate, but there’s still plenty of quality on this BA roster. Paula Pazule, Nikola Kuzmanovic, and Ines Goryanova all featured heavily last time out and should continue to shine.

JMA are playing their season opener in this one, and WNBL Division One Defensive Player of the Year candidate Sitota Gines Espinosa is a standout talent on the Rockets’ roster.
