MVP award for Whitehouse, Segura Moreno

After a pair of impressive campaigns, Sheffield College’s Abbey Whitehouse and John Madejski Academy’s Carmen Segura Moreno have been voted as the 2019/20 WEABL MVPs.

In Sheffield’s debut season, GB international Whitehouse has been a force to be reckoned with as she helped the South Yorkshire programme to a 5-5 record and #4 seeds in the North.

Individually, the talented scorer enjoyed a league best 22.3ppg, with other notable markers on the year including an efficiency of 23.3 (WEABL 3rd best), 12.6rpg (WEABL 6th best), 5.0spg (WEABL 5th best) and 1.1bpg (WEABL 9th best).

“I’m so grateful for winning this award and being able to take part in the Northern Conference of the WEABL,” said Whitehouse.

“I’m proud of where my team finished and want to thank all the coaches who helped us get to the playoffs and get the team together as I wouldn’t have got this award without their determination for the Sheffield College girls team.

“My overall performance was a reflection of the team effort with a limited bench, I feel everyone played a significant part and had a big contribution to the team’s success both on offence and defence this season.”

In the Southern Conference, JMA’s Carmen Segura Moreno was a worthy recipient after helping the Rockets to a regular season title and the #1 seed.

The 5’7″ guard was in integral piece to JMA’s roster, providing leadership and inspiration to go with 14.3ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.9spg and 1.3apg.

With fellow WEABL All-1st team selection Sitota Gines Espinosa combining with Segura Moreno to form an effective guard combo, the exciting shooter put together a season that impressed coaches across the Southern Conference.

“A big thank you to the WEABL for giving me this recognition, I am very happy and excited to receive this award!” Moreno said excitedly.

“It has been a great season for us and now I have to keep working hard with my team to get as far as possible, I have loved my time in Reading.”

The WEABL final is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 18 March as Copleston and CoLA go head to head for playoff glory. That game tips at 2:30pm, and entry is free to all spectators.
