Week 6 Preview – WEABL

Nick Winter/Copleston High School

After another week off, the WEABL is back with four games making up the week 6 schedule. With a pair of games in both the North and South, there’s plenty for all eight sides to play for.

Derby Trailblazers Academy (1-2) v Nottingham Wildcats Academy (0-2)

After suffering a narrow 52-48 defeat to Manchester last time out, Derby will be hoping to bounce back at the first time of asking to get their record back to .500. Former WEABL Player of the Week Kenny Hamilton will be key to that, she currently averages an impressive 12.3 points, 17.7 rebounds and 7.7 steals per game.

The Wildcats have dropped back to back games against Manchester and Charnwood, leaving Nottingham still hunting for a first win of the season. Finding that first victory on the road will be tough, but the Wildcats will give it their all tomorrow.

The Sheffield College (2-1) v Manchester Mystics Academy (2-1)

After beating bottom side Myerscough in their last game, Sheffield now sit at 2-1, good enough for joint 2nd place with tomorrow’s opponents Manchester.

Both teams will be hoping to get the upper hand here in the race for the playoff places, with Abbey Whitehouse and Zoe Katteregga for Sheffield and Jade Mbam and Maddie Owen for Manchester all looking to excel.

Barking Abbey (2-1) v John Madejski Academy (3-0)

In what should be an exciting encounter, undefeated JMA head to perennial Southern Conference challengers Barking Abbey tomorrow for an important clash at the top of the standings.

Former Player of the Week Cynthia Adebayo is putting up impressive numbers through three games, averaging 14.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game for BA. Ines Goryanova has also contributed well, chipping in with over 13 points a game.

Guard combo Carmen Segura Moreno (14.0ppg) and Sitota Gines Espinosa (12.7ppg) have been pacing the Rockets on offence, they will both look to take the game to Barking tomorrow.

Copleston High School (3-0) v Itchen College (0-3)

Joint top plays joint bottom in Suffolk tomorrow as undefeated Copleston entertain Itchen College.

Nobody has found a way to slow down multi-WEABL Player of the Week winner Ella Pearson as yet, with the 5’10” wing currently enjoying a 29.5pts/9.5reb/3.4stl/31.5eff stat line per game. Add in the likes of Cameron Taylor-Willis and Susannah Rafiu around the paint and it’s no surprise that Copleston are currently undefeated.

Itchen have faced three tough opponents so far in Barking, Reading and CoLA, who currently possess a combined 7-3 record. There’s no harm in falling to defeat against those sides, and the same can be said for Copleston right now as well. Caitlin Collier has played well so far, averaging a team high 12.5ppg.
