Player of the Week: Megan Haines

CoLA’s Megan Haines has been awarded the Week 16 WEABL Player of the Week after dropping a huge 30 points in a hard-fought win over Barking Abbey School.

The game was a close one throughout, with Barking making a serious fourth quarter comeback to take the brief lead. Megan Haines then stepped up to deliver 11 of her 30 points in the final four minutes to help seal the victory for CoLA (6-3) advancing them into to second place in the WEABL standings. Haines shot 9-21 from the field, hitting 3 triples and going 9-12 from the line.

On receiving her award, Haines said: “I am very grateful to get this award. I’m pleased about the win for our team more so than anything but it is nice to be recognised for the performance, we needed to defend our home court against Barking Abbey. It was important for our league standing.”

“I have been working hard the last couple of months not just physically but mentally on my game which has proven to have brought success upon our team. I started off getting my teammates involved until my coach gave me the confidence I needed and believed in me, insisting that I shoot the ball, and from there on I have widened my game to not only assisting but also scoring to help my team along this journey that we are on! So therefore I would like to thank everyone that was involved that lead me to getting this award!”

Coach Jackson Gibbons commented: “I’m proud of Megan’s evolution this season, as she said, she has really made a big effort this season to develop the mental side of her game. Megan already has a high basketball IQ and her progression in using it in games and mental resilience are really coming along now. Her performance against a very good Barking Abbey team is testament to the hard work they have all put in. No one realised Megan has as many points as she did as it was a good team performance, but all the girls were really happy for Megan’s performance and this accolade.”
