The second edition of the WEABL 3×3 event began on Wednesday as six teams advanced from the Regional Qualifiers to make the National Finals.

Hosts Copleston, Charnwood and Myerscough all made it through alongside Oaklands, Barking Abbey and Nottingham in reaching the National Finals to be played on Wednesday 10, January.

Myerscough went through the day unbeaten as they saw off Loreto with 15-8 and 14-9 victories, while also beating Nottingham twice with 16-12 and 12-10 triumphs as the latter came in overtime with Shauna Harrison netting the game-winner.

Nottingham secured their first win with a 14-4 success against Loreto and advanced despite a 16-12 defeat in the reverse fixture due to a superior points difference.

“The 3×3 qualifiers are something we have been looking forward to and today was certainly no disappointment,” Myerscough’s Neal Hopkins said.

“Both our boys and girls team were able to go undefeated against some excellent opposition and played some great basketball in the process, we can’t wait for the next stage.”

Oaklands also went through the day unbeaten as they swept their pool at the Leicester Sports Arena.

They opened with a 21-9 success against Moulton before an impressive 19-8 victory over the hosts, Charnwood – in which Aliz Varga netted 10 points – was rounded out by beating John Madejski Academy 19-14.

“The 3X3 events are always a great platform for players to show their skills and creativity and we saw plenty of that in the Leicester Regional qualifiers today,” Oaklands Head Coach Lee Ryan commented.

“The women were strong throughout and stepped up when it mattered to beat Charnwood who come through with us to the finals.”

Charnwood had started off with a comfortable 21-8 win against JMA before securing their place in the finals with an 18-7 victory over Moulton.

In the battle of this season’s newcomers, JMA overcame Moulton in a 16-8 triumph for their sole victory of the day.

“It was a great event today, was a nice showcase of talent with a different format,” Charnwood Coach Krumesh Patel said.

“Both men’s and women’s team did great and competed hard in every game. Glad to see both teams advance to the national finals which was a great event last year so everyone is excited for that.”

Copleston left it late to seal their place in the finals as their 21-12 victory against Barking Abbey in the final game saw both teams advance in a 3-way tie.

Defending champions, City of London Academy missed out with their 19-17 success over Greig City ending up not being enough for a top-two finish in the pool.

Ashleigh Pink scored 15 points in the vital win for Copleston and started with an 11-point haul in a 21-9 success against Greig City before the hosts fell 9-10 against CoLA.

Barking Abbey moved to a 2-0 start as they edged out CoLA 16-15 in the opener before beating Greig City 21-7 with their place in the finals confirmed, despite losing their final game.

“Both our teams performed well today,” Copleston Coach Nick Drane said.

“I think the experience of last year’s competition really helped. The 3×3 is a great addition to the EABL and WEABL calendar.”
