City of London Academy were crowned the first ever WEABL 3×3 National Champions on their home floor after prevailing over Barking Abbey in overtime, 22-20 in the final on Wednesday at City of London Academy in Southwark.

The winners were presented their award by NBA All-Star and Indian Pacers’ Paul George, who is in town for the NBA London game on Thursday night, and were elated with the victory.

“It’s actually great winning the WEABL 3×3 in our home gym, especially it being that whole team’s last year here,” said CoLA’s Ire Ozzy-Momodu, who top scored with 14 points.

“The home crowd were amazing as usual, they always come to support. We kind of left it to the last minute (to pull out the victory), it wasn’t intentional, we always come through each other. We have a saying of playing for the girl next to you, and we did just that.”

CoLA went undefeated through the group stages at 2-0 to advance to the knockouts, where they defeated Charnwood 21-12 in the semi-final.

They had faced little resistance up until the Championship game, which was a re-match of their pool stage match up against BA where they won comfortably. However, the final would be a different story, with the two teams matching each other blow for blow in the opening ten minutes before heading to OT, where Ozzy-Momodu knocked down the winner inside to seal it.
